Remote-working-ready in 48 hours

We’ve been treading very carefully recently, when it has come to talking about remote working. As fears have continued to rise surrounding the global spread of the Coronavirus, the last thing we’ve wanted to be accused of is pushing our tech and ‘ambulance chasing’, when lives and businesses are being so severely affected. (#BeKind, remember!)

However, with demand for remote working solutions now at an all-time-high, the need for help, knowledge and support is unprecedented. That’s why we’ve penned this blog and are also announcing that our technical team are offering their consultancy services free of charge to help businesses through this complex time. We’ve also rolled out some new processes internally so that, if organisations need to get up and running with a new remote working solution, we can (in most cases) have everything ready in a maximum of 48 hours.

The rise of remote working

Remote working has been popular among a number of companies for some time. It presents a productive, environmentally-friendly and efficient way of managing a field-based team; it reflects the modern demands of a flexibility-hungry workforce who don’t want to be constrained by a rigid 9-5; and it offers a business continuity solution in the event of the unexpected. It allows organisations to be agile, when everything around them is changing.

For many reasons, it hasn’t appealed or simply couldn’t have worked for some firms – and we’re not here to judge or pass comment on why it hasn’t been adopted by all. Every company is different.

However, while government guidance to delay the spread of COVID-19 is changing not only by the day but the hour, ‘social distancing’ is a strategy which looks like it’s here to stay, for a little while at least. Even among teams who currently feel healthy and don’t need to even consider self-isolating, we’re seeing a growing number adopting precautionary safe working practices and encouraging home working to help combat the likelihood of entire workforces being struck down.

Things to consider when getting started

We know remote working could represent a step into the unknown for many organisations, but for some it is the norm. We for one are happy to share our experience of it if anyone is looking for tips on how to make it work, and quickly - a chat costs nothing!

Typically – in terms of technological infrastructure – there are many components to consider, including cloud storage, data security and workforce connectivity across the board. But there are some quick and simple ways to help colleagues start working from home too, without feeling cut off from the business, and all while keeping a keen eye on the customer experience.

WebRTC-powered video lies at the heart of this, helping to maintain face-to-face communication, in only one or two clicks, with minimal expense. And above all, with maximum safety.

There are procedural things to consider too, but when time is of the essence, drafting lengthy policies may not feel like a priority (or even a possibility for some!) In the absence of formally-documented expectations, honest and fluid communication is key. Talk to colleagues about what is happening, why, and be clear about what you, as a team, need to achieve. Keep talking too and monitor who may need extra support. Now is definitely the time to stay culturally connected.
