CEO, Tim Mercer get up into the hot seat for The Yorkshire Times new regional business feature…
What does a typical working day for you involve?
I get up early and go to the gym before work (this doesn’t always happen), before a day of both internal and external meetings. I try to get home in time to put my two children to bed – this isn’t always possible, but it’s my most important task of the day.
What makes your company special?
Our people and our standards – we strive to provide the service levels that make people want to do business with us.
Do you have any business rules that you swear by?
Always be straight and honest, even if it’s not what the client wants to hear. And carry out things you’ve committed to!
Do you dress up or down for work?
Up and down. I tend to wear jeans with a shirt, jacket and nice shoes – no tie.
What piece of advice would you give to your 18-year-old self?
Do better at school, listen more and take that chip off your shoulder! I definitely wish I’d worked harder from a younger age.
What’s your favourite Yorkshire venue for an event or team away day?
I always like to take our team to the races in York. It’s an event that can be enjoyed at any age – as long as you gamble responsibly, of course!
How do you prefer to travel for business?
I drive or take the train.
What’s your favourite place in Yorkshire to relax?
Apart from at home, you can often find me out with my dogs in the countryside somewhere – I love a good hill or two!
Where is your favourite place to eat in Yorkshire, and what dish do you recommend?
There are so many fantastic restaurants and pop-up kitchens, but one of my favourite places is The Three Acres, situated just outside Huddersfield – beautiful food and incredible service!
What do you miss most about Yorkshire when you are away?
The hills! I lived in London for four years and I really missed seeing the rolling countryside on a daily basis.
